Honey Girl Books and Gifts features heirloom-quality products that tell our stories and yours. We also aim to sustain a vibrant community by creating meaningful fun!
HGBG PRODUCTS
1. Quilts, each with a vintage touch. Original designs include Alice in Wonderland, Seattle, Respect, Black and White, Crazy Alice, Frankenstein, and the Adorable Sloth baby quilt.
2. Original illustrated books for readers age 8 to adult. Two titles so far: "The Frankenstein of the Apple Crate" a gothic alternative origin tale, drawing on my scholarship on the French Revolution; and "A Spooky Tale of Spring", a retelling of Dickens's "A Christmas Carol" set during the COVID-19 pandemic and featuring a ghost cat who counsels kindness. Coming next winter: "Five Seattle Stories by Seattle Kids", a collection of work written and illustrated by the Write YOUR Story kids of West Seattle (see below).
3. Toys made of repurposed materials: Luxury Troll Boudoirs and Eek dog toys, now available!
Backstory: Sustaining Community and Humanity
Honey Girl Books and Gifts is the creation of Julia Douthwaite Viglione, a writer and teacher as well as a designer / seamstress. The mission is to sustain and nurture humanity through connections: connections created by literature and textile arts.
HGBG is a deliberately small, sustainable business. We use fabrics from all kinds of sources, as appropriate for the products. Each work is slightly different. All products are made in our home studio in the Admiral neighborhood of West Seattle, WA..
We care not only about using sustainable materials in our sewn goods, but about sustaining creative spirits in this place we love. (I was born and raised in WSEA, an alumna of Gatewood!) That is why we co-teach with local writers a free workshop for kids called "Write YOUR Story," a semester-long writing workshop for ages 8-12, founded in 2012. Each semester we rewrite a famous old story and illustrate it; for example in Fall 2023 we wrote "The Trickster of Puget Sound", based on "Puss in Boots"!
A public, in-person book club on "Classic Novels (and Movies)" is another way to weave together literature and community. We meet monthly at C & P Coffee. See the West Seattle blog or C & P Coffee websites for latest title.
See you soon! After living far from Seattle for many years as a college professor, I'm so glad to be back! I look forward to meeting neighbors at the West Seattle Summerfest, ArtWalk and Art Hop, and the Admiral Junction Funktion of course! Watch for our Win YOUR Quilt game next summer!

FoRest Wellness Collective set out to create a unique place, intentionally designed to serve our community, as well as provide a space for independent practitioners to thrive. Every small business under our roof maintains their independence while working symbiotically to provide a convenient and customizable experience for clients. Our website and shared online booking system help direct you to the best service and practitioner to match your needs. We wanted to combine the convenience and luxury of a spa, while staying true to our small business values. Our gift card program allows the giftee a completely personalized experience as they can be applied towards any service offered at FoRest, as well as our Maker Market. The Maker Market is our small, yet mighty retail space that we have donated to local artists and makers to display and sell handmade goods. Shoppers are encouraged to pay the makers directly via their Venmo codes, or if you don't have Venmo we can take a credit card, all proceeds go directly to them. The market is open to clients during appointments, and to the public during events or by request, just ask (email, text, or call) and we're happy to accommodate.
A Child Becomes Preschool has been operating since 1989 and was founded by Michelle Neal, D.Ed. AKA Teacher Shelley. We reside in North Admiral and offer part-time preschool for children aged two-and-a-half to five. Our environment is one where positive and lasting relationships with students and their families are built from the first day students walk into our doors.
Our teaching staff are recognized for their knowledge, skills, and quality teaching. Each values kindness, compassion, and empathy and strives to help students to be positive, responsible, unselfish, and self-disciplined. As young children learn their preschool is a place of acceptance and trust, they can begin to be curious, active, and thoughtful thinkers.
At ACB, our curriculum is tailored to the age and needs of our students. A playful, developmentally appropriate environment is built to invite creativity and curiosity, with the end goal of instilling a life-long love for learning. Our curriculum covers social-emotional skills, numeracy, pre-literacy, fine and gross motor development, and themes which are designed to build curiosity and inquiry.
Knowing that the preschool years are foundational to a child’s future academic achievement and social-emotional development, we understand the importance of a high quality preschool setting. We are confident that when students leave our school, they will be ready to embrace the new and exciting challenges of kindergarten and beyond!
In the next few years, our current location will be demolished to make room for 15 affordable housing units. We will be relocating nearby in West Seattle and plan to continue maintaining this preschool’s reputation and ultimate goal of having a positive impact on young children and their schooling…so much so that they look back with pride and say, “I loved my preschool, A Child Becomes!”
